Conduct! Every move counts (2016)
Documentary about the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Competition from the point of view of five up-and-coming talents. The conductor and namesake for the young conductor prize Sir Georg Solti, was not only master of his craft and winner of no less than 32 Grammy prizes; more than any other artist on earth. He was always aware that the conductor must act as the eyes and soul of an orchestra. Consequently, it is not surprising that Solti has taken even a few tricks from the great composer Richard Strauss to even the music justice.
After his demise in 1997, a competition has been held in his honor since 2002 every two years, in which the best young conductors from all over the world appear in front of a jury in Frankfurt to prove their skills. Twenty-three young conductors perform in front of 100 unknown musicians, who must be brought together to form a harmonious orchestra. The documentation by Götz Schauder accompanies five leaders in spe from all over the world, who have to demonstrate their skills and their instincts within 20 minutes in the competition. What they present here not only determines their future: at the end of the competition, offers and engagements attract the most important orchestras in the world.
In three rounds of separation, the chaff is slowly separated and only the best perform with the orchestra in the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. Here it is finally decided whether they have the talent for conducting and they can step into the great footsteps of the master Georg Solti or not. He finally said that there is a mystery why one person can direct and the other does not.
